WhatsApp is a popular messaging service with more than 1.5 billion active users worldwide. A vulnerability has been discovered recently in the messaging app that is being exploited to insert Spyware onto Android and iOS devices, as reported by The Financial Times. The spyware is developed by an Israel’s secretive NSO group and can be installed through a voice call without the call being answered on the target phone.

The spyware named “Pegasus” is a serious breach of privacy as once installed, can turn on target’s mic and camera, collect email or location data. WhatsApp has taken notice of this breach and has asked users to upgrade WhatsApp version immediately.

“This attack has all the hallmarks of a private company known to work with governments to deliver spyware that reportedly takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems,” said WhatsApp in a statement provided to The Financial Times. “We have briefed a number of human rights organizations to share the information we can, and to work with them to notify civil society.”

According to researchers at Citizens Lab, a UK based human rights lawyer was recently attacked by Pegasus. WhatsApp took notice and fixed the issue.

WhatsApp has encouraged its users to upgrade the app to the recent version immediately. “WhatsApp encourages people to upgrade to the latest version of our app, as well as keep their mobile operating system up to date, to protect against potential targeted exploits designed to compromise information stored on mobile devices,” said WhatsApp in a statement.
